Welcome to our blog!

Hello, Namaste, Sita Ram, Assalamu alaikum, Welcome one and all to our blog!

We are two student bloggers, Renata Ramoutar and Adrianna Peters, of the University of the West Indies, St. Augustine, Trinidad. We are currently pursing a Double Major in Geography and Environmental and Natural Resource Management. As part of one of our Urban Geography course's, we have embarked on a mission to investigate public spaces in urban cities and how efficient these public spaces are in the urban sphere.

Many of you may be wondering why public spaces. What does that have to do with Urban Geography? Geography is the study of places and the relationships between people and their environments. (National Geographic 2016). Here we are looking at how the public (people) interact with others and with their public surroundings. What many people don't know is that public spaces help to shape a city. It humanizes the urban setting by allowing inhabitants to take a break from the hustle and bustle of city life and engage in social interactions. Unfortunately, many of these spaces fail. Although the title of our blog is Public Space or Wasteful Space, we will be shedding light on various aspects of public spaces to better understand its significance to urban areas.

What we hope to achieve:

1. To shed light on what exactly is a public space.
2. To identify individuals that utilize public spaces.
3. To examine features which makes a successful public space.
4. To highlight reasons why most public spaces fail.
